Why am I committed to working for New Horizons Center for Individuals with Special Needs?
My path has always been connected with the developmental disability community. Growing up, my brother was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges he has overcome and he has proved that the DD community can do anything with the right services. He now has a wife and family and drives trucks for Freeto Lay. My mom later selflessly adopted my four siblings, all with special needs who are all now successful adults still utilizing DD services . I worked 18 years in Oregon for Catholic Community Services, a non-profit serving families, children, and persons with disabilities. After deciding to leave Oregon for a new adventure and moving to Lake Havasu City, I continued my DD adventure with Milemarkers as a general manager for DD services. I am very excited to get back to working for a non-profit serving the community. I love to be able to influence and support employees working in this field and help to ensure they are happy in their workplace and in turn do the highest quality work.
What are you professionally and personally proud of?
In 2018, I received my MBA with a focus in Organization Systems. My career has led me to learn about each department and role in any organization. I have a variety of experience including quality assurance and quality improvement. I enjoy doing my part to ensure a highly effective organization to support people to live their best lives. Personally, I am a widow, but I have three children, two are married with their own children so I have 5 grandkids. I was a surrogate twice, one of which was twins. It was one of the most profound moments in my life to give the gift of life. The first family lives in the Portland area and now has a son, the second family lives in Australia and now has twin girls. I love when they send me pictures of the kids, I have stayed connected with both families.
Who are you when you are not working?
I love adventure! As Ricky Bobby said, “I wanna go fast!” I enjoy all things speed and four-wheel drive. I love the water and I love hiking. I have two crazy boxer dogs who take up the rest of my time.
